Because You Can’t Pack “Maa Ke Haath Ka Khana” in a Suitcase- But You Can Be Prepared!
Moving into a PG is exciting. A little scary, a lot emotional, and totally chaotic.
Whether you’re a student shifting cities for the first time or a young professional starting your first job, that moment when you zip up your suitcase and wave goodbye hits differently. Suddenly, everything from your pillow to your coffee mug needs to be chosen with military-level precision. Because let’s be honest, living in a PG is very different from living at home.
At PG Dekho, we’ve spoken to thousands of students and working professionals. And almost everyone says the same thing after moving in:
“I wish someone had told me to pack that!”
So here we are with the ultimate, no-nonsense, straight-from-experience checklist of essentials you must carry before shifting to your PG.
No fluff. Just real stuff you’ll thank us for later.
1. Bedding Essentials – Because PG Beds Aren’t Hotel Beds
Don’t rely on the “mattress provided” promise. They’re usually thinner than your motivation on a Monday.
What to pack:
- Single bed bedsheet (2–3 sets)
- Pillow + pillowcases
- Blanket/quilt (1 heavy, 1 light)
- Mattress protector or extra foam layer
- Mosquito net or repellent if you’re moving to humid zones
PG Dekho tip: Listings often show what’s included, but pack yours to be safe. Comfort = better sleep = better days.
2. Bathroom Must-Haves – Keep It Clean, Keep It Yours
Shared washrooms can be tricky. The key? Carrying your own everything.
What to pack:
- Bucket + mug (most PGs won’t provide this)
- Flip-flops for bathroom
- Toiletries (shampoo, face wash, soap, toothpaste)
- Towels (2–3)
- Laundry detergent + scrubber
- Basic cleaning cloth/sanitiser spray (trust us)
PG Dekho tip: Choose PGs with attached washrooms if hygiene is a priority. It’s worth the extra rent.
3. Clothing – Pack Smart, Not Heavy
You’re not going on a vacation. You’re setting up camp. Be practical.
What to pack:
- Everyday clothes (mix of formals, casuals, comfy wear)
- Nightwear (at least 2–3 sets)
- Innerwear (a week’s worth at minimum)
- Light woollens/raincoat depending on city
- One pair of formal shoes, one everyday sneakers, one bathroom chappal
Pro tip: Avoid overpacking. You’ll shop locally anyway. Leave room in your bag and in your room!
4. Kitchen Basics – Because Hunger Doesn’t Ask for Permission
Not all PGs allow full kitchens, but most let you have basics.
What to pack:
- Electric kettle (lifesaver for Maggi, tea, and cup noodles)
- Microwave-safe plate and bowl
- Steel/insulated water bottle
- Spoon, fork, and a small knife
- Airtight snack jars
PG Dekho tip: Choose PGs that offer meals. If not, pick one near verified tiffin providers (we list that too!).
5. Electronics – Stay Charged, Stay Sane
City life = Digital life. Don’t be caught unprepared.
What to pack:
- Phone + charger
- Laptop + charger
- Power bank
- Extension cord (a must!)
- Headphones or earplugs (shared room = shared noise)
- USB fan (if you’re unsure of the PG’s airflow situation)
6. Storage & Organization – Your Best Friends in a Small Space
PG rooms are compact. Organization is your survival strategy.
What to pack:
- Underbed storage bags or boxes
- Cloth hanging organizers
- Hooks for wall or cupboard
- Laundry bag
- Small mirror
- Lockable suitcase or trunk (double up as storage & security)
PG Dekho tip: Our listings mention available storage. Match your stuff accordingly.
7. Emergency & First-Aid Items – Be Your Own Rescue
You’re your own mom now. Pack like one.
What to pack:
- Band-aids, antiseptic cream
- Painkillers, cold/fever meds
- Oral rehydration salts (for the post-street-food regrets)
- Sanitary products (stock up)
- Torch or emergency light
- Scissors, safety pins, sewing kit
8. Documents & Daily Essentials
You’ll need more than Aadhaar on move-in day.
What to pack:
- Government-issued ID (Aadhaar, DL, Passport)
- Passport-size photos
- Printout of PG agreement (if signed online)
- College/office joining letter
- Wallet, ATM card, basic cash (not all PGs accept UPI for rent)
Don’t Pack These:
- Too many books (carry what you need)
- Excess cookware (unless you’re planning to open a dhaba)
- Decorative stuff (leave that for later)
- Items PG rules don’t allow: induction cookers, incense sticks, etc.
Personal Note from a Former PG Resident:
When I first moved to Pune, I packed 5 jeans (wore only 2), 3 perfumes (used one), and zero hangers (disaster). I also forgot a mug, and had to drink tea from a steel bowl for two days. The point is: everyone messes up their first PG packing list.
That’s why PG Dekho exists.
